A clause is a group of word that contain a subject and a predicate. More clearly, a clause has a subject and a finite verb. It is larger unit than letter and word and smaller unit than sentence in language.
A complete sentence is contain at least one clause. There have one clause in simple sentence and more in complex and compound sentence.

For a example Philip will come and Jhonny will come . Here in this example have two main clause philip will come, jhonny will come both have the equal value in this sentence.

It is clause that contain a subject and a verb but depend on other clause, can’t stand alone. If we separate it from the sentence it cannot complete meaning. Subordinate clause is linked by subordinating linkers, conjunction or adverb.
For a example it was raining when we were ready for movie . In this sentence it was raining is a independent clause but when we were ready for movie is a sub ordinance clause because it can not stand alone and if we separate the clause form the sentence it has no meaning at its own.
